This article invites the reader to visit an old country estate on a small Danish island, where a Syrian family is now living after having escaped the civil war in their home country. In the absence of personal belongings and in the presence of other people’s old china and furniture, home-making is a complicated process that challenges long-time habits, routines of everyday life and different notions and practices of “homeliness”. The article examines the role of objects in the creation of home, everyday life practices and social relationships after the escape.
